MCA died two days ago, which really hit me hard. Much harder than what I’m used to. Whenever a hip-hop artist that I really like dies, I just think “Oh shit…I’ll never hear any more new music by them…EVER”. But MCA’s death was different. I wasn’t really expecting any more new music from the group, nor did I really have much of a vested interest in their future music plans. I have every Beastie Boys album, and I really enjoy their music, but they’re far from my favorite hip-hop group.

Then why did MCA’s death make me so much more upset than most rapper’s deaths? It’s because in my mind his passing represented the death of a truly key part of hip-hop history…the physical end to the group Beastie Boys, whom had more influence on hip-hop than just about any other group in history. I have a much more profound appreciation for what they’ve done for hip-hop than their actual music. Back in the 80’s, they invented an energetic style of hip-hop that was way ahead of it’s time, with classics such as Rhymin & Stealin.

This is my favorite song off of their 2011 album Hot Sauce Committee, Pt. 2.
